Know Your Coverage
Most basic homeowners’ policies cover a wide variety of damage, including damages caused by:
• Lightning Strikes
• Smoke Damage
• Wind Damage
For damage done by events such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or tornadoes, you may need to have separate coverage, since most standard policies do not cover such natural disasters.
Standard insurance policies cover not only the dwelling but also other structures on your property, such as detached garages and storage sheds. In addition, all of the contents and personal property inside your home are likely covered against damage or loss by theft, up to the amount you have specified in your policy.
Insurance Tips For Homeowners
If you have certain highly valuable items, it is helpful to list these separately to make sure they are covered for their full value, even though it may require you to get an appraisal and list these items separately on a rider to your policy, with an additional premium. It is also a good idea to keep a current list or inventory of all your possessions, so that in the event of theft or loss, you will know what is missing and be able to prove the loss to the insurance company. Keep a copy of this list in a safety deposit box or other place separate from your home, so that the list will not get destroyed in a fire or other disaster.
